Calling all Election Data - a crowdsource project
first vanity ever ^ | Nov 5, 2020

Posted on 11/05/2020 7:49:48 AM PST by posterchild

I'd like to curate a list of DIRECT sources for the raw election data for all of us to use - this may require a bit of poking around at the various Secretary of State websites or other sources for the various states. These are of course most urgently needed for AZ, GA, MI, NC, NV, PA, and WI but if you find other state raw data sources please post them also.

This website https://electproject.github.io/Early-Vote-2020G/index.html displays data from each of the states and DC. More importantly, clicking on a state shows the source of the data.

Data which may be of interest: vote counts by time (look for trends or sudden surges), vote counts by geographic area (compare with registration counts), vote counts by venue (in person, mail in, etc) and others.

Some of the data formats which are useful would be CSV (Comma Separated Value), XML (eXtensible Markup Language), XLS (spreadsheet), JSON (JavaScript Object Notation). If a source does not look useful to you or you are unsure how to process it please post it anyway as others might.

Please post a state name, URL, a list of data formats, and a brief description.

Accepted - >2 million(1.6 mil dem).
Rejected 951.

Totally believable.

PA, https://electionreturns.pa.gov/electionFeed.aspx?ID=29&FeedName=2020+General+Election+by+County

raw county data in XML format

For those not familiar with XML, this data is meant to be processed by software. Depending on what browser you use it may or may not even display.

A typical rejection rate for absentee ballots received in time for an election is around 1%. So typically you would expect more like 20,000 rejections.

First time absentee voters make more mistakes like forgetting to sign the affidavit portion so it is very strange for the rejection rate to be 20 times less than normal.

Supreme Court must throw out ALL mail in ballots and only count in-person voting and verifiable absentee ballots.

Mail-in ballots are a violation of the constitution. Mail in ballots are equivalent to a “twitter survey”. A mail-in ballot is a ‘ballot’, not a ‘vote’.

Votes are in person verifiable ID and absentee verifiable request with ID – A constitutionally protected VOTE. Everything else is unprotected BS and SC must throw them out in EVERY state. Most expeditiously, in the swing states.

With a little editing, I can convert the XML to HTML5 -- and then clip it back to the POTUS data.

<EXAMPLE>

Thanks but I was hoping for sources that were machine readable for FReepers to use python/ruby/java/javascript etc on for analysis rather than rendering it into a human readable form. There are plenty of human readable forms in the MSM:)

"please fix the URL in the original post, it is missing the final ‘l’ on the ‘.html’ suffix."

Most HTML parsers (browsers, HTML editors, etc...) will acept either ".HTM" or ".HTML"

Unix websites may be less forgiving...

True but it was my failed cut/paste which unfortunately was becoming a distraction to my original post.

I agree: Now that I have a strategy for data reduction, I may be able to do a HTML <TABLE>; conversion to CSV, (spreadsheet) -- which is what I'd prefer for analysis & plotting purpses... ('Most every FReeper has a spreadsheet...)

There are a lot of screen scraping strategies but I was hoping there were plenty of raw data feeds and REST API’s for this stuff. The AP and NYT get this stuff from somewhere. I expect public data to be publicly available.

I”m rather appalled there is no open data project like https://data.gov for states and local jurisdictions voting results.
