Reminds me of Jubal Harshaw in Stranger in a Strange Land, who was a medical doctor, among many other things, but who refused to use the title because of idiots like her who wrapped themselves in it.
It’s enough for their complicit local media to talk about them all day.
Over the years I have been privileged to work with some high caliber, highly intelligent PhD scientists and engineers - many of them now retired or deceased. None of them were hung up on their academic credential/title that each, in my opinion, deserved to be addressed for their brilliance, professionalism, and ethics. Those that have passed on, the obituary did not refer to them as Dr. [....], even with their academic pedigree named in the obit.
At the university, the title was used more, especially between student and professor. After I received a degree or two, my professors would ask me to now address them by their first names, because “we are colleagues now” ... and I became friends with a few of them.
I never read that Jill Biden insists on being addressed as Dr Biden, or if it is a media thing to use her pedigree in a leftist dog-whistle attempt to keep the deplorables in their place. I can take offense to media and university arrogance and condescension whenever they spew their veiled hatred that Mr Trump is popular among the “uneducated” where the Mr Biden is strongly supported by the “educated”. People who say such things for political purposes are not too intelligent no matter how many degrees they have, and perhaps they should ask themselves honestly why do working people support Mr Trump.

Biden family moved from there when he was 10. It was/is a blue collar, industrial town with deep roots in coal mining, though there were other industries. Mafia had roots in the Scranton-Wilkes Barre region, that extended from North Jersey and NYC. In the 1960s and into the early 70s there were a couple of huge burning slag piles to the side of I-81. Today there is a coal museum. Not a vacation spot really, but you can find some good corner hometown restaurants that are a step back in time, like one can find in downtown Wilmington, DE.
I can see his pride in his family roots and the people there, I’ll give him that. But I’d be more interested in what the people there say he did for Scranton-Wilkes Barre after 47 years of his public serv(ing himself).
