They can go Boom if they come down far enough and are big enough. I have never heard one myself, but, have friends who have. It happens.

I have heard a fireball. A fireball happened over Phoenix early in the morning. I thought it was just the upstairs neighbors. At dawn as I went outside and I saw an amazing cloud trail that had me thinking it was from a rocket, but there was nothing known in the direction I was looking that to do that. It was only later on during the day I discovered the real truth. By the way a recent meteor over Russia was loud enough to break windows and injure people!
