Watched the Rifleman when I was a kid and I had to have a Winchester Model 1892 just like that. Finally, years later I bought a decent '92 in .44-40, bought a box of ammo (no easy feat back then) and got to the range to try it out!

Pop.

Not the thunderous roar of the Rifleman, echoing in the distance, not the powerful bark of Jimmy Stewart's Winchester '73: just "pop".

It was a disappointment to realize that a pistol cartridge fired through a longer barrel gives better muzzle velocity and better accuracy, but the sound is much reduced from its pistol brethren, resulting in less gas escaping at the muzzle and ..pop.

Hollywood sound effects strike again!

My favorite line in that entire series was by Martin Landau as a Mexican Bandito with an execrable Mexican accent:

“You would shoot Miguel.
Miguel who is your friend.”

It became a family expression (complete wit accent) for DECADES. LOL.
