Fighting cocks are dangerous...
If they hit your artery you can bleed to death.

It’s not ‘enjoyment’ it’s money - BETTING.

Living in that culture, one would think the police chief should have known better than to trying ‘grabbing’ one of those birds with out protection. Maybe he has done this in the past and got overconfident.

Nice piece of info for the “shoot them in the leg; you don’t have to KILL them!” crowd.
You could fill a few cemeteries with folks that bled out from leg injuries involving the femoral getting opened. A favorite target for experienced swordsmen in the day...

A gentleman that worked for me for years, made a grab for some ‘easy’ money; three years prison. (Yes he was rehired, good help is hard to get.)
Of the many interesting stories from his prison time, a fellow inmate would tell any that ask, he was in for killing a few chickens, and Col Sanders kills thousand every day!
He had been caught organizing cockfights.

That would have been a slasher, not a gaff. Slashers were also only used on one leg of the cock, gaffs were put on both feet. Also, for this very reason, the cocks were not handled during the fight if they had slashers on. A slasher was like a miniature saber, and razor sharp. A gaff was a curved steel round spike that would only stab. JFYI..

My father in law fought roosters for over 40 years here in the states, it was legal in Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Arizona, I believe was still legal. Some derby’s were fought here in Texas, although it wasn’t legal at the time.
