During the American Civil War (18611865), Maryland, a slave state, was one of the border states, straddling the South and North. Despite some popular support for the cause of the Confederate States of America, Maryland would not secede during the Civil War.

I didn’t have any ancestors in Maryland, at the time. They were all in Ole Virginny - or Europe.
(And I’m glad they dumped ‘Ole Virginny’ and made the state song ‘Shenandoah’, instead. It’s pretty much the most beautiful American folk song that we have):
