Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev blames TV show Dallas for the fall of the USSR because it opened people's eyes to western lifestyles

TV show Dallas was the main reason behind the collapse of communism in the Soviet Union, it has been claimed.

Eurythmics co-founder Dave Stewart said that former Soviet Premier Mikhail Gorbachev told him that the 1980s soap opera 'had more effect' in ending the Cold War than anything else.

Mr Stewart, 68, said the Gorbachev admitted an illicit broadcast of the US show in Russia had opened his people's eyes to Western life, and the Texas-based show 'brought down' the communist superpower.

There is a true story about Russian generals touring U.S. grocery stores during the Cold War while on some type of exchange program we had with the Russians to avoid a nuclear war.
They thought the first two were propoganda and didn’t believe such well stocked stores existed. In the third store they began crying realizing these places were everyday normal way of life in America. They were simply stunned.

Oh I believe him too.

The truth really does set you free. It set those young people free from the iron boot of communism.

What is funny is JR’s ranch was a moderately sized home in reality, it is in Lucas Tx. The miracle of TV made it appear huge.

On a similar not, the hotel from 'The Shining', although it appeared as though on some cold desolate mountain, in actuality you could throw a ball from the front door and hit cars going by on the street in front of it.

I was living in a part of the world where about half the people spoke english during a couple of years, many were hard core socialists, but yet, the number one show that they talked about was ‘Dallas’. It translates well even with subtitles because everyone understands (or at least they think they do) greed and power. I remember that I was absolutely amazed at the impact at that time. It truly was the number one show in the entire world. When I told people that I grew up in Dallas, they always asked how many oil wells and cattle I owned. I always told them I was one of the ‘hired hands’ that worked for the people that owned the oil wells and cattle (but not J.R. Ewing).

Didn’t George Lucas do similar fingerpointing towards that show for “destabilizing” the world back in 2006? I believe his exact words were “They [the viewers of Dallas] say that is what I want to be. That destabilises a lot of the world. There has been a conflict going on for thousands of years between the haves and the have-nots, and now we are in a position for the first time to show the have-nots what they do not have.”

Reagan Thatcher and the Pope. After that I think Chernobyl besides the immediate tragedy and crisis shook the system to its core in a way we don’t fully understand yet. Not just the average joe but all the way through right up to the politburo.
