TV show Dallas was the main reason behind the collapse of communism in the Soviet Union, it has been claimed.
Eurythmics co-founder Dave Stewart said that former Soviet Premier Mikhail Gorbachev told him that the 1980s soap opera 'had more effect' in ending the Cold War than anything else.
Mr Stewart, 68, said the Gorbachev admitted an illicit broadcast of the US show in Russia had opened his people's eyes to Western life, and the Texas-based show 'brought down' the communist superpower.

My Russian professor in college who survived Stalin and 60 years of communism would tell each class the story of her first trip to an American supermarket after she escaped communism. She said she walked in and collapsed to her knees and all she could mutter through her sobs where “they lied, they lied, it was all lies” she still visibly swept when she told the stories to the class. That and how her father was taken in the middle of the night and they were told he was sent to a work facility. They found out ten years later he was killed hours after he was taken and dumped in a unmarked mass grave. I took Russian because as a petroleum geologist it is good to know some. Spanish, French and Mandarin are also helpful in the industry. What I learned from my Russian class is the only good commie is a dead commie.
Chernobyl and the cover up did not help matters either. When you do something that brings the Ukrainian communist party, green party, and nationalist party together it is special.

There’s a youtube channel called the Ushanka Show made by a pretty levelheaded Ukrainian that lived through the late USSR. It’s quite an interesting channel and talks about all the various limitations in Soviet society. Especially the 2 bedroom apartments you had to share with 2 families you didn’t know.

That, and the fact that “Dallas” necessarily showed the life styles of ordinary Americans, along with those of its millionaire characters.
Kinda. What surprised them was the backgrounds of that show were also “opulent” in ways they didn’t need to be. Also, there were scenes of ordinary life that wouldn’t be allowed on Soviet programs. It was as if the Americans didn’t care if they showed a hovel somewhere

I I believe him. Because I read where the Russian Teens wanted to buy makeup and western jeans and wear them and do the things Western teens were doing. In there words, people want the same things all over the World. It is only the Leaders that keep them fighting.
