Precisely the only reason I use trekking poles for anymore. Otherwise they are just one more thing to carry.
I have been using a staff for decades for backpacking it has save me from falling many times.
A single staff bought in the supply shop at Philmont Scout Ranch in 1995 for a backcountry trek as an adult Scouter has served me well across the years. Balance assistance extends hiking endurance.
The poles come in handy when you have a grizzly bear charging you.

I i ave and recommend Black Diamond Aplines... also a pair of Glosamir 4 ultralights. I hate the ultralight poles. The Black Diamonds have saved my life several times. A sturdy pole helps maintain balance and break falls.
The pole if driven into the ground would be a marker for searchers to find what is left of you....
