"Intel insider" in this case means he's still connected with many people in that world, despite having officially left their employ. I've spent hundreds of hours in conversation with him, many from across the table over a meal and while traveling.
I'd say Juan is easily in a 1-in-500,000 person category, smarts-wise. He seems to have Ph.D.-level knowledge across many subjects, particularly in things related to military and 3-letter agencies.
Juan has been involved with many high-profile events of the last 35 years, though few would know his name. I think he goes by the pseudonym Juan O. Savin as a slight homage to "Double O. Savin," though the latter's is more directly from Tubal Cain, oo7.
He doesn't have a crystal ball and he's not perfect, of course, but "underestimate Juan at your peril."
