AUSTIN (KXAN) Beatrix Jackman was nearly speechless.
I dont even know what to say.
Her mask fell off because she was smiling so much over her gift one she rightfully earned.
Thank you to everybody who has helped me along this path. (KXAN Photo/Todd Bailey)
Jackman, 19, is officially an Eagle Scout as a member of Scouts BSA Troop 2019. She received her Eagle award Thursday morning outside her home in north central Austin. Capitol Area Councils Director of Marketing and Public Relations Charles Mead surprised her and her mom Julie Ziegelman with the medal and certificate.
Im so happy, Jackman said.
This achievement and ranking is one of many along her journey.
Jackman is a transgender woman. She was confident enough to tell her troop in middle school she identified as female shortly after achieving her Life ranking. The initial reception wasnt warm.
Their response was that I could either keep presenting as male there, I could do lone Scouting, or I could quit, she said.
She chose the latter, leaving Scouting for a while but decided to return when news of transgender boys being allowed in circulated. However, she had to wait until transgender girls were allowed in 2019.
Why come back? It was important for me to finish. It was important for me to blaze this path so others could follow, Jackman said.
Through all the loops and hurdles, she is now part of the Capitol Area Councils inaugural class of female Eagle Scouts. A goal that unfortunately bears a regret.
The biggest thing I regret is that my grandma died in June and missed being here to see me become an Eagle, Jackman said. But, she was so proud of me and knew I would succeed.

Good bye Boy Scouts.
The BSA made a temporary rule change for older Scouts (age 16-17) who joined for the first time in 2019. The temporary rule change allowed these new older Scouts (female and male) to apply for a limited time extension for the purpose of earning the Eagle Scout rank, which takes a minimum of 19 months to earn due to tenure and other requirements.
Based on this article, this trans woman should not have been eligible for the time extension, because she was not really a new member — she was a former member of a Boy Scout troop who decided to drop out.
So glad my family and my entire troop left BSA in 2014 and switched to Trail Life USA.
Bingo.
“Jackman” lol.
Not Jackwoman.
And... “self-soothing” kits.
That’s it.
I mean if you want to be a girl, why not the Girl Scouts instead of the Boy Scouts?
I wonder if the Boy Scouts now have a Transgender merit badge.
You get that merit badge for demonstrating being the least in touch with reality !
How sad how sad for the Boy Scouts....
Once proud, forever tainted.
Austin: Liberal cesspool of Texas.
Maybe in addition to identifying as a girl, he also identifies as a 17 year old.
What Scoutmaster, Eagle Coordinator, and District rep approved collecting donations for an Eagle Scout Project? This is bad BSA leadership!
They are getting ready to implement a “Diversity” merit badge, which is Eagle required next year.
Scouts age OUT of the program at 18, when youre not a BOY any longer. How was this cross dressing freak allow to break that fundamental rule?
Allowing a couple of hese things into a troop will very shortly convert the troop into an entirely LGBQWERTY troop as the normal boys exit r convert.
Where are the scout supporters here who said they could maintain their conservative, traditional scouting in their own Council or Troops? No, you cant.
When the head rots, so does the entire body.
I was involved in scouting as a boy in the mid 70s, and even then it became a numbers game, with my troop pushing membership at all costs, waiving age and other requirements to get recognition for being the fastest and largest growing troop in our council. I left shortly after all that.
I thought I read condoms in the list of items on that sign. Maybe I wasnt imagining it at all.
Yep, I saw it first-hand from the inside, and refused to cooperate with a corrupted institution which gave me 9-10 wonderful years, as a youth.
