While younger conservative and independent voters liked his post-COVID vigor, many senior and suburban voters do not share the presidents representation that the presidential contest was all about him beating the virus; they are looking for that Make America Great aspirational moment that makes them believe that they are all part of something bigger than themselves and that Trump would take them there.
If this debate had been held in January, it would have been about impeachment. Trump would have held the upper hand. If it had been in February, it would have been on the economy, and again, Trump would have held the upper hand. But it is October. COVID has dominated the news cycle for months. A journalistic wall has protected Joe Biden from tough questions about nearly everything, up to and including in his sons Hunters overseas business interests.
Which is why Trumps goals Thursday night are much more complicated. If he turns it into a night of grievances against all of these forces, Trump will not win these voters over. Rather, they want him to lift them up and bring people together on COVID.
They already trust his vigor when it comes to the economy. If they hear that, then Trump should get a decent bounce post-debate.

I have seen a recent Trump campaign ad talking about getting through COVID together, being careful but not afraid. Anecdotally, I have seen this same phenomenon with some seniors.
Most everyone is totally burned out hearing about the China flu. That's old s**t.
I have already voted for the President. From way out here in the bleacher seats I just want him to stay away from Defensive Counter Punches. Accentuate the positive of his accomplishments and future plans. Be the incumbent.

Which I believe is what he has been trying to do. His stated position is that we've turned the corner on COVID and are putting it behind is. He says that in 2021 the economic growth will be atmospheric. What the author is suggesting Trump is already doing.
Well, that’s what I think - and I believe I’m considered a ‘senior’ now (at least, AARP thought I was even ten years ago.)
When you’ve been through all sorts of weird stuff for many decades, a ‘pandemic’ IS something to be careful about - but certainly not something to fear.
Young people have a more difficult row to hoe - the last couple of generations have been so privileged, protected and coddled that they haven’t really experienced much that leads to wisdom.
He should greet Slojoe with “Hello, big guy!”
