Sounds like the most likely explanation but the drug haze one could also be plausible. The fact that he left 3 seems to me he wanted all his laptops out of circulation.
That’s actually the most logical explanation. It was his stupid way of trying to hide it from somebody. In his drugged-out fog, it never occurred to him that the repairman was going to see the contents and do something about it.
