Thats actually the most logical explanation. It was his stupid way of trying to hide it from somebody. In his drugged-out fog, it never occurred to him that the repairman was going to see the contents and do something about it.
If you follow the timeline of the lawsuit it becomes clear than once Hunter had “hidden” the laptop(s) at the repair shop, he could not get them back in the ninety day window because he did not want to pay the stripper, and the lawsuit continued for longer than ninety days.
