On October 6th, Steve Perry got a text from his recording engineer that read, Oh man, Eddie Van Halen. I cant believe it. The former Journey frontman had no idea what he was talking about. I dont watch the news anymore, he says. And so I picked up the phone and said, Whats going on?' When he heard the tragic news that the guitarist died after a long battle with cancer, Perrys mind instantly went back to 1978 when Van Halen opened for Journey for eight weeks on the Infinity tour. He phoned up Rolling Stone to tell stories from that legendary tour and to reveal that he got a call from Eddie after David Lee Roth left the band in 1985 that could have changed rock history in a profound way. These are Perrys words.

For bleeps and giggles, I wanted to compile a Top 20 Favorites VH list. I currently narrowed the list to 44. It is that tough. A top four band for me.
Impossible. Too many gems.
I am sensing that. I have three songs from “A Different Kind of Truth” among others.
Wow. That is interesting. I can almost imagine McDonald songing that chorus.
A song such as “Aftershock” will be overlooked easily. Sammy’s vocals are fantastic.
A Different Kind if Truth might be my least favorite album but some food one on there...”You and your Blues” is my favorite on that one. DLR’s voice ruins it.
Im not afraid to admit Im a Journey fan. They made a lot of great music back then, Parry would have been a bad move for the band and Perry both.
Probably worse than Gary Cherone. Hagar worked for lots of obvious reasons.
I will give it a listen before the night expires. I enjoy “Honeybabysweetiedoll,” “Outta Space” and to a lesser degree “Bullethead.”
Fair Warning is their best album from start to finish.
oh yeah. Balance is a great overlooked album.
So is the acronym album (I won’t put the title here but you know it).
Hard to argue with that pick. Then I listen to 1984 and say the same thing. Then I listen to 5150 and it is just as good! Almost every album is an amazing experience.
The songs blend nicely.
Not a weak song on the red album..lol. Soooo good. Some great songs like “in and out” can get overlooked. Love the guitar licks on that song.
The longer version (there are two on You Tube) of “Don’t Tell Me What Love Can Do” is a phenomenal display of musicianship.
Back to the acronym (red) album — by any other name — “Judgment Day,” “Pleasure Dome” and of course “Pound Cake” are wonderful but the first two could be top ten songs for me. “Spanked” is pretty good, too. “Right Now” is a good pop song.
That release will be 30 years old next year. My word!
Agreed. I dont get the Steve Perry hate. He was an amazing talent for
certain. Fame really had a terrible effect on him though later
In life. He lives a quiet and sane life now. Seems like a likable guy.
Might as well check this one out too

From what I remember, it pretty much revolved around Dude looks (and sounds) like a lady. I personally like the high pitched vocals in rock music, myself, so long as its technically sound. Magic Man by Heart is one of my all time faves, which was from the same time as early Perry, and faced pushback as well for not being true rock. Some just dont like that sound, especially from a man. Could be jealousy as well, however, as few can sing like that. Mike Matijevic and Bruce Dickinson are some of the few others who actually had the chops.
