A California woman who was missing for nearly two weeks at Zion National Park in Utah was found safely on Sunday and reunited with her family. Holly Suzanne Courtier, 38, hadnt been seen since riding a private shuttle into the parks Grotto area on Oct. 6. Her disappearance prompted multiple search and rescue efforts that were complicated by the fact that Courtier didnt have a cell phone and hadnt left a trip itinerary.

Boy, my wife, who is an RN, was really pissed at me when I told her I lost that much weight in one game.
And I wasn’t skating like the guys playing out...those guys really DO get gassed. My thing was having to pick myself up of the ice with all that waterlogged goalie gear on, over and over and over again...I recall I was a bit shell shocked there.
My best friend used to play on my team years ago, and he said of all the things he has done, nothing gets him as gassed as playing an intense shift of ice hockey. Heh, he used to get pissed hearing people shooting the breeze on the bench after coming off the ice-I guess SOME people skate harder than others...
I used to give people stress tests years ago, and some people couldn’t walk on a treadmill. Before they had drugs to make their heart think it was under stress, you had to exercise them with an arm-ergometer (a bicycle pedal setup they “pedaled” with their arms) or you could have them step up and down off of a step made for that purpose.
It doesn’t sound like much, but you can actually get people’s heart rate up just by having them step up and back down repeatedly!
I tend to agree. If you were smack dab in the middle of the park...you would be 15 miles from any paved road (N, S, E, and W). Then you throw in the non-paved surface roads and trails...you’d never be more than 3 or 4 miles from hitting one of them. If you just followed one single direction...in six hours...you’d hit some road/trail. I would assume she had a compass on her, and some type of map.
Just sounds like she went off with some friend for most of the missing time.
Hockey is so kinetic and nonstop I can imagine it really taking it out of you. I used to play soccer which I suppose is similar and had a few episodes of either dehydration or mild heat exhaustion where I had tunnel vision, ringing ears, and an overwhelming need to just sit the heck down. Of course I was young then and bounced back pretty quick. A banana and some water and a few minutes on the bench and I was ready to go again!
Im an old man and never played through a full game in my life, then I got my son going in pee wees. Id go on the ice for pickup games on the weekends. This lasted through high school, people say 2 minutes aint that much. Bullshitz! Go hard that long youre gassed. The freakin goalies are working their butts off, especially if your defense sucks. This story has some holes in it, too Me.
True but I’d still carry one in case I could reach high ground and hope for line of sight
Yes, me too. I always carry one. I can often get a signal on high ground or a mountain top. A personal locator beacon would be best to have in case you got lost. Connects to a satellite.
Hahahaha...how I wish for the days when I could tell if my ears were ringing or not...
I feel like Quasimodo: “The Bells! The Bells!” all the time...oh well. There are worse things...:)
I have never been able to play soccer, or any game requiring a run of more than about forty yards. I am one of those guys whose legs seem to be a bit stumpy in comparison to the size of the torso!
I always wished I could run, but when I had to play soccer in high school, I was the weak sister, no doubt.
Nice
bttt
Wondered if she might go ‘alien abduction!!!’
Ive been to Zion a dozen times. You cant get lost. Just follow the river and it takes you into town. She wasnt in the park.
This is kind of like an excuse a teen would use if they took off for a few days.
Here in AZ they have the stupid motorist law.
Eg; dont try to drive through a flooded wash in a storm, or otherwise.
You get fined for costing the state money to help you when you were informed by signs at the washes, commercials etc.
They need a Stupid hikers law, here and everywhere. There is just too much of this.
Three pounds body fat per day (7000 calories each) and reduction of fluid retention in the gut could account for 25# weight loss.
Mayo Clinic study reflects +500 calorie per hour expended by a person of 160#s hiking with a light backpack. This is on top of basal metabolism of 16002000 calories.
I camped and spent two whole days in the park.
Its not possible to not walk somewhere and find a path after too long.
“Courtier didnt have a cell phone “
A 38 yr old woman went that long without texting and checking her looks and licks?
No freaking way.
I suspect a hookup that would not be approved of in her neighborhood.
Hiking the Appalachian Trail ?
Fluid management for them is a serious business.
I did an ironman a while ago. After the swim and bike phase, I was down 10 pounds.
