'Overjoyed': Missing Zion National Park hiker Holly Courtier found alive after 12 days

A California woman who was missing for nearly two weeks at Zion National Park in Utah was found safely on Sunday and reunited with her family. Holly Suzanne Courtier, 38, hadn’t been seen since riding a private shuttle into the park’s Grotto area on Oct. 6. Her disappearance prompted multiple search and rescue efforts that were complicated by the fact that Courtier didn’t have a cell phone and hadn’t left a trip itinerary.

I thought the first rule was “get found” first. My bad. :)

IMO That lovely woman purposefully left her phone somewhere like home, or just had it turned off. And disappeared for some personal time. With or without an as yet unknown companion. She lost track of time.
Or zombies took her, less than likely.
Just my opiniion, but hey, in today’s day and age, any story worth telling is worth writing down.

Okey-dokey

"Well ... anybody know if Mark Sanford is accounted for?" LOL, my first thought was how this story sounded eerily similar to the sanford story 🙄

A cell phone is a tracking device and she didn’t have one?

In mountains areas of the West cell phones often can't hit a cell tower. Happens to me all the time when I go hiking or trail riding in my Jeep.

Zion has plenty of rocks but very few trees or square miles. And it has a whole bunch of visitors. This story sounds fishy.

GPS works and a small Garmin is less than a $100. Great diet plan though.

Cell phones don’t work in many areas so that’s not a problem. Not leaving a trail plan is very dumb.

I love survival stories like this and am glad she’ll have a story to tell.

I have spent time in Zion, a beautiful park with warning signs everywhere.

So have I, and it is indeed beautiful. However, it is rugged country, with lots of storms occurring, and there are some very dangerous predators there--mountain lions, bears, etc. I find it hard to believe that this woman lasted 12 days, without extra water and food. I wonder if she had set up a rendezvous with someone, then let herself be "found".

Exactly my thought... she’s been holed up w/ someone special.

Twelve days w/o equipment, knife, etc would be tough for an outward bound trainer...

You don’t starve to death in 12 days. Lack of water and exposure are much more potentially lethal. If you have adequate clothing or can light a fire, and have access to water, 12 days is quite survivable.

I spent a month in the mountains of Wyoming on a NOLS course. We hiked out 45 miles with heavy packs for four days over rugged terrain without food. Much harder than sitting around for 12 days.

Rule of 3s applies. 3 minutes without air. 3 hours without shelter. 3 days without water. 3 weeks without food. Food is vastly overrated in short-term survival situations.

“I love survival stories like this and am glad she’ll have a story to tell.”

She might want to be careful what she says in front of the police, methinks.
