‘There’s a lemur!’ 5-year-old helps crack SF Zoo theft case
AP News ^ | 17 Oct 2020 | AP

Five-year-old James Trinh was unaware of the headlines when leaving his preschool Thursday in Daly City, about 5 miles from the zoo, and exclaimed, “There’s a lemur! There’s a lemur!” Cynthia Huang, director of the Hope Lutheran Day School,

Huang was skeptical at first. “I thought, Are you sure it’s not a raccoon?” she said.

The children, parents and teachers watched as caretakers arrived and coaxed the lemur into a transport cage, Huang said.

San Francisco Zoo director Tanya Peterson said Maki was “an aging wild animal who needed special care” for ailments including arthritis. “He’s still agitated, dehydrated and hungry,” she said, adding that veterinarian teams were working to get him back to health. Due to his travels, she added, “He’s socially distancing from his primate family” but would hopefully join the other lemurs soon.

Authorities had offered a $2,100 reward for locating Maki, which the zoo will be giving to the church.

“I understand there is a young boy there who witnessed this and also called in the tip, and we are giving his family a free membership to the zoo,” said Peterson, who thanked the boy and everyone who helped. “They literally saved a life.”

What did he want to do with the lemur?

No, I take that back. I don't want to know.

I read today that the shutdown is coinciding with a lot of dog thefts. People are out of work and finding new ways to make money selling purebreds and exotic species.

LCMS?

Are you certain its not the dreaded Wisconsin Synod?

His family was given lifetime membership in the Zoo, where family membership currently goes for $159. At that rate, the family will receive the equivalent amount of the cash reward ($2,100) by the time he is 18 years old. If his parents have younger children for when he goes off to college, or if he continues to use it later when he has a girlfriend, wife or kids of his own, it will really be a good deal.

They display the LCMS cross logo on their site; however, I don’t find it on the official LCMS locater page. It appears to be a Cantonese Chinese congregation. The little boy’s name sounds Vietnamese.

I was joking , being raised schooled and married... in the LCMS. Having relatives in the Wisconsin Synod we used to joke about it.

A nice church and beautiful children.

And with this covid crap they will need every penny of the reward.

It’s probably the same dog thieve as before Covid, but with everyone at home the demand for dogs/companions has increased.

Breeder prices have skyrocketed.

Makes sense. Probably a little of both.

We live near a large public nature zone. We’ve seen a lot of people breaking the rules in there since the shutdown, harming the environment the lefties constantly use as a battering ram over the right. Hard to say whether shutdown misbehavior is rage/boredom because of the confinement, or whether it’s the general tenor of the times: lawlessness, inculcated hatred of Western Civ reaching critical mass, and sticking it to the “privileged”.

“Breeder prices have skyrocketed.”

There are multitude of Pit Bulls in SPCA shelters all across America. Nobody wants them.

If you want a dog but can’t find one, go volunteer at your local SPCA Animal shelter. Those animals desire attention.

Very glad that they found the lemur, and busted a dude in the process.

Also Thursday, police took 30-year-old Cory McGilloway into custody, San Francisco police Lt. Scott Ryan told reporters Friday.

McGilloway, whom investigators had identified as a suspect in the lemur’s abduction, was arrested Thursday evening by San Rafael police on unrelated charges. He was expected to be transferred to San Francisco County Jail to be booked on charges of burglary, grand theft of an animal, looting and vandalism all related to the lemur theft, Ryan said.

Police did not provide other details, saying the investigation was still underway but credited a multi-agency effort and tips on a public tip line that led to the suspect’s capture.

Yes, when they become adults. Also, they cannot be house trained, and they can live more than 30 years.

They sound like horrible pets, though Kirstie Alley keeps fourteen of them.
