If you really want to experience a slap in the face, for what passes as art; I encourage you to visit the History of Modern Art in Washington, DC.
You will see such marvels as a scrap piece of plywood, with screws in it, and twine entitled “Constructing the Letter “H”.
I have seen projects in the local 4-H County Fair that exceeded this effort in talent, creativity and execution. Yet, this museum is full of garbage I wouldn’t stop and pick up; if I saw it sitting along side the road.
My definition of art, “If I could make it, it ain’t art.”
When teaching children to appreciate art it is important to encourage them to identify one aspect of a piece they find pleasing or distasteful.Art is about connecting good or bad.

My rule of thumb is, "If it's something even I could make, it ain't art." Since I can at least draw stick figures, I'd say that puts me one up on "modern artists".
But ... tell us how you really feel ;-)
Agreed with what you said.

Reminds me of a “modern art” show I saw fifty years ago in Tulsa OK. It consisted of a short “I” beam, sawed through the top “T”, to to the bottom part of the beam, bent down, and spray painted. The critics loved it.
I had been doing steel work like that in a hot structural steel fabrication shop with no credit as the parts were bolted into building structures.
I am reminded of what one “artist” said about his work....”Everything I SPIT is ART!
