During the war, the Army was giving out Bronze Stars like candy. We had Sailors do a tour with an Army Command early in the war and get Bronze Star. Most of these guys were support staff not warfighters. The Navy stepped in and pulled the award downgrading it because Navy Standards for a Bronze Star were stricter. I understand that in the later stages of the war the Navy started letting Sailors keep the Bronze Stars. These were mostly senior people, they needed a been there done that awards to get promoted.
