> And those toddler harnesses with the leashes maybe look a little less silly. <
Those harnesses are a good idea. They are useful in many different situations. A friend of mine used one whenever he took his toddler to the mall. He should have been commended for adding a layer of security for his child.
But instead he got how dare you walk your child like a dog stares.
I had a friend who remembered being on one of those harnesses and he said it gave him a great sense of security knowing that mom or dad was at the other end.
But instead he got how dare you walk your child like a dog stares.

What would be the reaction if the parent was wearing one of those studded dog colors?
“How dare you care more for the safety of your dog than you do a child!” comes to mind.
We’ve never used one but I can see where a child leash could come in really handy in a place like Yellowstone and other situations.

Our youngest son was absolutely fearless. We couldn’t keep him in a stroller and, in stores he would head for the doors and try to go outside.
So, we got a harness and leash. That lasted less than 5 minutes. He simply laid down in the floor of the store and refused to stand up as long as he had the harness on.
Yes, he was a handful and it was a fulltime job keeping him alive for several years.
