Policing For Profit: How Civil Asset Forfeiture Has Perverted American Law Enforcement

Picture this: You’re driving home from the casino and you've absolutely cleaned up – to the tune of $50,000. You see a police car pull up behind you, but you can’t figure out why. Not only have you not broken any laws, you’re not even speeding. But the police officer doesn’t appear to be interested in charging you with a crime. Instead, he takes your gambling winnings, warns you not to say anything to anyone unless you want to be charged as a drug kingpin, then drives off into the sunset.

This actually happened to Tan Nguyen, and his story is far from unique. It’s called civil asset forfeiture and it’s a multi-billion dollar piggybank for state, local and federal police departments to fund all sorts of pet projects.

Why did this idiot take cash? In Vegas? He’s lucky it was just a cop.

It sounds like a Chicago PD story, in fact I just watched that episode again last night but they used fake cops to do the robbery, much easier if you are a real cop with asset forfeiture law backing you up I guess.

The police wonder why they’re losing support.

It is confiscation. They always hide what they are doing behind a nice sounding name, or a complicated one, like this one.

What other options do you have on a big win?
I’ve been to Vegas but never won big.

You can get a cashiers check. Or wire it to your account. A good idea with all those corrupt cops and other criminals around. Vegas and Reno probably have the highest concentration of criminals in the US.

Years ago, when my son was young, he was in the local Police Explorer program (another state, not where we live now).

I used to go to the meetings with him. One time, when they showed a video and gave a presentation glorifying seizing assets from citizens-- WITH NO DUE PROCESS -- we were outta there, and never went back. There was a shot of a bunch of greedy cops, smiling like thieves, with stacks of $20s in their hands. I know the Constitution. That made me SICK. And, it's still going on.

I support the police catching criminals. But I don't support them preying on citizens.

“Confiscation” is a lovely little newspeak term for “the government is taking your ****.” I’m surprised they don’t just call it “taxation.”
