He was probably Spanish, of Jewish descent (not popular right then in Spain) possibly a marrano.
In any event the Portuguese probably got to the Caribbean islands before he did, but had found nothing of interest there.
His crew was also mostly Jewish and they sailed in the evening before the next day where some sort of Jewish repression was about to happen; if the were caught up in it, who knows how history would have been changed.
