Please teach others here about safe use of Cloud services

What cloud services are safe for conservatives from hacking or other mischief? What are best practices and tips for a modestly skilled mac user with no background in programming? (Need replies in ordinary everyday English, as I do not speak Geek.) Grateful for some awesome freeper tutelage. Thanks in advance.

That’s good advice, Wally Bert—just to keep visuals in the cloud and not documents.

What cloud services are safe...?

You could trust your cloud data to Apple. Nope.
Or Microsoft. Definitely nope.
Or Google. HELL No.
Or Amazon. Are you outta your mind?

There’s a simple fact about “The Cloud.”

There is NO cloud!
You’re just using someone else’s computer storage.

But unlike your own, local hard drive storage, it’s usually going to be available 24/7 with nearly around the clock accessability (but it’s rarely perfect, there was just recently an outage of Office 365 services for several hours.) There may be on-line backup of your data, or at the very least redundant storage of your data in different locations for data recovery.

You really need to use all the security services available, like multifactor authentication, where you have both a user ID and password, but then you need to have an app, or even a cell phone to receive a text message with a key.

Something else to be very careful of is being aware of fraudulent, “phishing” sites. It’s not unusual to receive an email that appears to be from Microsoft with either links that will ask you open files, or other links asking you to enter your credentials. They’re literally “fishing” for your credentials.

I’m afraid that I can’t really help with Apple, the company I work for uses Office 365, AWS (Amazon Web Services) and GCP (Google Cloud Platform.) A call to one of the Apple Stores should be of help.

Yeah, like, true, if your house burns down with regularity. a 1/billion chance of that......and the least of your worries if it does.

Tell that to the people who lost their homes and businesses in the wildfires in the west. It's bad enough that you lost everything but when the video inventory of your house went up in flames try convincing the insurance company to believe your statement that what you say is correct. My friends not only lost everything they had no proof to back up what they were claiming on the insurance claim. They were denied thousands of dollars in claims by the insurance company.

I like the suggestions above to get an external drive!

Portable hard drives will also go bad as well. I keep 2 backups of my important data, and in fact, I recently had a 4gb HD that just died after about 3 years, I've just backed it up to a newer drive.

Cloud tech is full of security holes. Especially Amazon. Apple and IBM less so.

Keep in mind the “Cloud” is a collection of massive data centers locked down as tight as a max prison.

Your computer has a door to it.

Good way to store streaming media. Private files are best kept private. Thanks Albion Wilde.

You are correct. It is just someone else’s computer.

I use NO offsite “cloud” storage. Everything is done with external hard drives or USB Flash drives.

4 terabytes of cat and grandchild photos! Awesome!

Seriously, that looks like a great recommendation for a harder-core user than ol’ Nana here, but if I do get around to starting another business, I will keep your suggestion in mind! Thanks!

That’s a beauty! You could throw it in your bag if you would need to back up while traveling! Such as bugging out during the elections...

I remember my first external drive was as big and heavy as a cinderblock patio paver.

thumb drive for all your files. They are small, portable and you just unplug them and your files are unhackable.

I’ve been checking out the one called PhotoStick that has an organizer program in it.

The only clouds that I trust & use are those that happen on an otherwise sunny hot day when the wife & I are bass fishing... Since she is 81 I don’t want the sun getting her skin all wrinkly, old looking, or cancerous...

Since we are all sharing info on this thread, may I recommend Neutrogena Healthy Skin Anti-Wrinkle lotion. It has the best ingredients (retinol and hyaluronic acid) at an affordable price.

By yourself an NAS box and store your files theres. Raid 1 configured preferably.

I have to admit, I do not understand your post, not being very techie. What is NAS and what is “Raid 1 configured”?

Network-attached storage is a file-level computer data storage server connected to a computer network providing data access to a heterogeneous group of clients. NAS is specialized for serving files either by its hardware, software, or configuration. Wikipedia

RAID 1 consists of an exact copy (or mirror) of a set of data on two or more disks; a classic RAID 1 mirrored pair contains two disks. This configuration offers no parity, striping, or spanning of disk space across multiple disks, since the data is mirrored on all disks belonging to the array, and the array can only be as big as the smallest member disk. This layout is useful when read performance or reliability is more important than write performance or the resulting data storage capacity.

What are you looking to do?

Mainly store photos, short family videos, some photo-shopped pix, and relatively simple word-processing documents—nothing particularly graphics-intensive.

LOL! Too true!
