I think its an age thing
Xers who werent punk raised are all in on Van Halen
Boomers like me grew up on anything from the 50s rock and roll like E and Buddy and Cochran and Chuck that my mom played for me as a kid kid and Little Richard her favorite to Brit Invasion and yes pop rock like Grass Roots etc which I liked btw and Chess Stax and Motown and onto San Francisco psychedelia like Steve Miller or JA and in New York the Velvets and Later southern rock and early metal...a wide chronology of my life featuring bands from Stones to Doors to Who to Hendrix to The Band and Byrds and CSN and Manassas and Allmans and Skynyrd And ZZ and of course Led Zepplin and the Floyd but also Tull and Wishbone Ash and Humble Pie and pre California Fleetwood Mac and of course Sabbath.....and Lou Reed with Hunter and Wagner....so damn good ......that chronology range.....with hits all charting way before my 18th birthday in 1975
While I was by then also a serious Deader
I was also noticing punk and early alternative like the Dolls and Television and Modern Lovers and the Police and Devo and Ramones and early Heads and Mink DeVille and of course The Clash....Clash big folks....
Anyhow....I was at Ole Miss trying to be cool and wed go to LSU or Austin to hang with friends where punk new wave had made more inroads than it had at Oxford
So Van Halen sorta hit when I was into college rock....imagine the Eagles Greeks Dont Want No Freaks or Zappa Disco Boy
I think we all agree disco sucked 90% of it anyhow but hey ....where did the girls go....you had to at least show up....ugh
Both Van Halen and AC/DC and even Kiss both sorta hit after I was grown and my 13 years younger brother drank it up
I did notice Eddie was a strong guitar player and deserved to be on same lists as Eric or Jimi or Duane or Johnny Winter etc
And their videos I loved.....thats what brought them home to me I guess
Steve Ray Vaughn also came out even later actually but his style was more familiar so it felt like Id been listening to him longer
Like Blackberry Smoke or Mule feel today
My little brother bought tickets a few years ago for he and I and rib and four of my kids
Nashville Arena....Roth ....it was perfect...sounded like the albums
Something I never thought Plant and Page did honestly though Floyd did
Im truly sorry for this loss to you folks even if VH was simply not on my radar in formative years I empathize and like their music
Its all Ive listened to since yesterday
Now if I outlive David Gilmour ....that will be my comparative loss
Respect
PS daddy was all Grand Ole Opry and WSM even we listened from 450 miles southwest of the tower at Concord road and 65 I pass daily in my life now
But take Mick out of the equation, is anyone talking about Keith...what happened to Mays after Freddie died, except getting paid to help whitewash a biopic about the band...yet someone like Clapton is Clapton, in whatever iteration, or even, dare I say, Eddie Van Halen. EVH had gone through two lead singers (I don't count Cherone, LOL), and a bassist or two, yet he will always be relevant. Come to think of it, the Glimmer Twins have survived a few line-ups as well...hmm, may have to rethink this a little....nah, Richards is still no Clapton or SRV.
To assume I am a millenial considering my admiration for Clapton, SRV and EVH indicates to me you tried the brown acid....Boomer
Hey man-just a bit of friendly ribbing as Im cool with anyone who has reverence for an unfortunate bygone era. In my mind, if anyone were to watch Hail!Hail! Rock n Roll, they would understand Keith Richards beyond the drugs persona he cultivated in the 70s. Also they would know his process and understand he was not trying to be Stevie Ray Vaughan or Eric Clapton.
Not a boomer (born in 73); Elvis, Roy Orbison, Beatles all day but I do understand the difference between a solo virtuoso vs. massively talented rhythm players with a knack for inventing the greatest riffs ever recorded in POPULAR music (also see Malcolm young). Yes, to their chagrin Mick/Keith are codependent for relevance (or past relevance as its pretty much over). That run starting with beggars banquet before they sacked Brian Jones through Exile was pretty mesmerizing.
Friday bump.
