30 years ago I moved into my house

Crows were nesting in my Jack pines.

I thought to get myself a baby to raise and kept trying to get up to their spike branch defended nests.

They were ticked off and for 27 years every time I went outside they cursed me to a thousand brutal deaths.

But then Hrafn the Dobe pup came.
(Hrafn means raven and he literally picked his own name)

They played with him from outside the safety of the fence and pushed sticks through the to offer him because they saw it was his favorite toy.

And then they simply stopped screaming at me completely.

If I hadn’t actually seen all this I’d say I was crazy.

They’ve watched me carefully bury car struck crows too.

They appreciate that kindness and remember it forever.
