The Baseball Writers' Association of America overwhelmingly voted in favor of removing the name of Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis from the MVP awards for both the American League and National League, it was announced Friday.
Of the 313 votes, 89% were in favor of removing Landis' name from the awards. The MVP plaques will be nameless in 2020.
Earlier this year, former NL MVPs Barry Larkin, Mike Schmidt and Terry Pendleton told The Associated Press they would favor removing Landis' name because of concerns over his handling of Black players.
Remember stories like this when they complain constantly about, “white fragility”.
Must have just discovered Landis was a racist.
Maybe they should remove BBWAA from the award for putting Landis’ name on it in the first place and keeping it there for 88 years, including 72 years since Jackie Robinson.
When does “Cap” Anson get thrown out of the HOF?
It’s Ok, all of professional sports is about to go into the dustbin of history anyway.
Landis did much for baseball. But he didn't do everything.
Shouldn’t the awards to all players prior to desegregation of baseball be revoked because they were only gotten because of white privilege? [/sarc]
I was a very serious baseball fan and a student of baseball history until 1994 ... and I had no idea Judge Landis name was on the MVP trophies. Go figure.
Exactly. Anson pretty much started the “color barrier” in the 1880’s. It was a different time. And people are not saints.
When you lose Mike Schmidt, you have lost America.
I want to bring back real sports like chariot races and gladiatorial combat. GO BLUES!
Rollerball!
Well, when they start taking the name of Robert Byrd off of all those buildings in West Virginia, then I can take them more seriously.
In the same vein, when will Abraham Lincoln's name be taken off the Lincoln Memorial because of his views about white supremacy?
But those people should have known what 2020 would be like..The fact they didn’t anticipate the future,is their fault....
Just like the dems had better understand what will be happening in years to come and how racist,anti- Catholic and rotten they will be thought of....
His contemporary influence and prestige are regarded by historians as playing a major role in establishing the racial segregation in professional baseball that persisted until the late 1940s.
On several occasions, Anson refused to take the field when the opposing roster included black players. Anson may have influenced the most noted vote in 19th-century professional baseball in favor of segregation: a July 14, 1887 one by the high-minor International League to ban the signing of new contracts with black players.
Under rules of the final
I truly hope that all those who are judging people of history by the wokeness of today, are subjected to judging by those with whom they disagree. Im sure that the Judgment Day will not look kindly on these who would destroy all those with whom they simply disagree.
Those who judge others by the mores of the time in which they live, are rarely respected in the writings of the history in which they lived.
