Advice from a Sales Trainer

Posted on 09/30/2020 5:15:26 AM PDT by Saveourcountry

As a seasoned sales trainer I have some suggestions to make to the president for the next debate. Sell benefits. Drive your points home succinctly. Let the listeners know exactly what the consequences are for voting for Biden.

I liked that the president looked energetic and strong. I also liked that he was flushing out Biden regarding the things that his side will do to the country, but he didn't go far enough. He should have driven home why it would be devastating to a free country to have court packing on the Supreme Court. That should have been made more clear for the ignorant masses.

Also, with the media blackout of all bad news for Biden, it was good that the president brought up the Hunter Biden scandal. However, he should have driven the point home succinctly. Directly say that it looks like during Biden's 47 years in public office that he has been selling his influence to enrich his family. While America suffered Biden's own family prospered beyond belief. He should use the words "selling your influence".

He needs to also relax and have a little fun with the lunatics he is up against.

I noticed that he was assuming that everyone knew what he was talking about and the dangers of voting for Biden, but only the people who have been keeping up with politics know the real issues. The debates draw the people who are just beginning to pay attention along with the die hards. For that reason it is important to drive home every point.

Trump’s performance was targeted to the Bernie bros, not the general public. Many will abandon Biden now.

Trump is going to be Trump. He doesn’t care about your advice.

I didn’t like the format, and I definitely didn’t like Wallace’s selectively applied time control, although Trump did step on Biden’s time a lot (and vice versa), the way it was moderated was biased. But in those times when Trump did not interupt him, Biden got away with laying out multiple (blatant bullcrap) attacks on Trump, and I felt Trump did a poor job of enumerating his responses.

Their strategy was clever. In one two minute segment, Biden would range his ridiculous accusations over a variety of topics so that Trump really would have had to work hard (and have a sharp short term memory) to address them all. He would go from saying that he tanked to economy, to saying he his horrible for black people, to saying his (Trump’s) trade deals were bad, and then maybe saying that he killed people by blowing off corona. ... and all that is clever because Trump is supposed to bite on the corona comment and the other crap gets let go.

Wallace should have forced Biden to stick to a topic, but he didn’t. So Biden’s debate became a litany of topically varied jabs, and often had very little or nothing to do with the question.

Personally, I think Biden won the debate. Not because he was right. No, in that regard he lost. But his debate strategy was better.

Also make strong points about the 2020’s being Boon or Bust.

I like Trump being Trump. I disagree that he would reject advice from an expert on this. He is smart and funny. He should use what he has going for him. Also, he should be himself and drive home his points.

One other suggestion for the President.....talk TO the camera and make “eye contact” with the people. I think he did fantastic in debating the two others.

Definitely the young Bernie voters will probably stay home. That’s why the Dems are planning the massive vote by mail fraud. They know they will not be able to get their voters to turn out so they have to fraudulently inject enough mail in ballots to put their crook over the top.

The die hard Bernie supporters will still vote for Biden, though. They don’t care what he says in the debates. They know he can be controlled and they are just trying to get him elected so that they can take over.

I think Trump won on points, however I agree he could sell himself more directly to the viewer. That’s what Biden tried to do quite directly, pointing at the camera and saying “I care about YOU at home”.

But it ain’t going to happen. Trump chooses to speak the truth as he knows it, and he leaves the viewer to be smart enough to understand.

Example, vote fraud. Trump has been warning people for months. At first it sounded like he was being alarmist, but the facts keep proving him right. That’s how he does it.

I’m sure we all think if Trump would just give us 5 minutes to control his pitch, he’d be a shoo in. We’re probably wrong. This man has been successfully selling himself for decades.

Most viewers are not smart enough to understand. The problem is overestimating the intelligence of the masses. Look at how easily the media controls them. He has a chance to inform them during the debates. He should take advantage of that opportunity.

Also, the facts on vote fraud do keep proving Trump right, but the public does not know about it. The media does not report the actual evidence of vote fraud, and actually continues to report that there is no evidence of it.

Quite a while ago, Muhammad Ali took on a Japanese wrestler. Everyone thought Ali would knock him out, but the wrestler spent every round diving ti the ground and trying to kick Ali’s legs out from under him.

In the end, Ali had red legs to show for the effort, and no one was impressed with the event.

Trump was the wrestler. He wasn’t going to stand there flat footed and let Biden punch away, which certainly would have been a loss for Trump. He took away Biden’s attacks by knocking his legs out from under him.

The “legs” in this case were any enthusiasm anyone had for Biden going in.

Newt Gingrich correctly observed that republican candidates lose when they allow themselves to be “politely” pummeled by the moderator and the opponent.

Trump has better strategic and tactical instincts than any of us. He made a fool of Biden.

Here are some specific things that could be said regarding these points:

Why did you sell your office? It looks very much like while you have been in politics for the past 47 years, that your family has done much better than the country. If this isn’t selling influence, what is it?

He should plainly say things like, “You want to pack the court, and if you get the chance to do that - it will fundamentally change America into a left wing hell hole. Judges, instead of legislators will become the lawmakers in this country. That is not the way that our country was designed.”

~~~
I like your metaphor, and I get it for how it applies to how Trump’s strategy is much better than most republican’s for not standing there and politely taking the abuse, and I agree.
I disagree that he made a fool of Biden.
I have to admit that i didn’t see the whole thing, right now, but most everything I saw looked squablish and worthy of massive eye rolls. Everyone who was in a camp probably had their opinions validated, but no one who was truly objective thought Trump made a fool of Biden.
Trump when on offense too, but he had very few zingers or memorable retorts. He didn’t even really fluster Biden too much, except for several times when Biden hesitated and you could see his gears turning. The one I remember in particular is when Trump said “You just lost the left!” You could tell Biden was trudging around in his brain for a cute quip but could locate anything.
If you understand sales then you must also understand reading your audience and targeting the message.
Besides, this isn’t sales. There is no product to be purchased. Meaning, this isn’t a logical choice of pros and cons and cost value that Trump was trying to win over.
Trump was going for emotion last night. He did a great job. He showed he was a fighter and wasn’t going to put up with the extreme left-wing tearing down this country.
I disagree that this is not sales. It absolutely IS sales. He must be able to persuade. That is sales.
I agree that he did a good job. He could have been better though, had he driven his points home.
The election is absolutely all about sales - it’s selling your (Trump’s) vision for the country, and how that vision will directly impact the voters who are going to pull the lever for him. It’s also about contrasting that vision CLEARLY against that of your opponent.
Having spent my entire career (30+ years) in corporate sales, I agree entirely with OP. Trump needs to SELL (his vision). In that, he failed utterly last night. There was no clear “here’s what I’m going to do, and why it benefits YOU AT HOME”. Biden did that a couple of times, looking directly into the camera and addressing the people at home. I don’t recall Trump doing that once.
I get that FR is all fired up about what a great fighter Trump is - but we are all voting for him anyway. Job one last night was to convince the undecided and impressionable voters who can still be convinced to come over to the (R) side - and I’m not sure the approach Trump took last night achieved that one bit.
“He must be able to persuade”
That isn’t sales. There are many things in life where persuasion is needed, but nobody is buying something.
Sales people think everything is sales when persuasion is used, but it isn’t, and politics is one of those things.
Also, persuasion isn’t always about logical choices. Sales people, especially lousy ones, think logic is all there is, failing to understand emotion is often the only thing.
The juniors sales people, who are terribly annoying, keep repeating logical points of why to buy something, not understanding that logic is not what the buyer is keying on.
