Each “strand” of tubing is called a lumen. They come with one, two, or three. They generally stay in for a few days to a few weeks so a new insertion is not necessary each time one needs IV fluid, an antibiotic or other IV medication.

Yes. Thanks. I knew what their purpose was-the ICU nurses had told me that back when Dad was there. IIRC, it only had one lumen. And I do recall that they had to change it now and then. He was there for over a month.
