Its a magnetic field not a magnetic shield. Some people should not report on science if they lack the basic understanding of subjects in science. At least learn the terminology. It may shield in the verb sense but it is not a shield in the noun sense.

I’ve caught sight of the northern lights twice in southern Missouri. The first time they made the sky look red so it looked like there was a huge fire to the north. The second time I actually saw the ‘moving curtains’. They must have been tremendous farther north.

Grew up in Canada in rural areas with good night skies for viewing took sightings of the northern lights for granted
did you know if you whistle a tune the northern lights will dance? ;)
