VANITY Best shotgun

Posted on 09/25/2020 1:32:25 PM PDT by NTHockey

I want to buy a home defense shotgun and I would appreciate FR input. I’ve always been more of a rifle and pistol person. What say y’all to a senior citizen buying a shotgun for the first time. Is Mossberg Shockmaster or Roadblocker a good choice.

Interesting, thanks for sharing. Sounds like a Chinese copy of the Russian “AK-12’s” similar to how the SKS is a knock off of the AK-47’s. Might be decent, but personally my experience is the original Russian arms are superior, albeit at a higher cost. YMMV.

I think thenkey here is that these guns are available even in this market because so few know about them. And 439 is the price of a half dozen 12 round mags.

If you need a bayonet, you have failed at owning a shotgun

There are lots of good brands out there. The most important thing is to get a pump, not a semi-auto. Pumps don’t care what you feed them, they will cycle. Autos can be a little more finicky. It’s real important that it goes bang when you need it to and not have to monkey around with a stuck shell at a critical moment.

There was a similar knock off product called the Catamount Fury a few years ago, which offered a great entry price point but appears to be discontinued now. Will be interesting to see what happens with the Lynx, thanks again for mentioning it,

First time I fired mine, it practically recocked itself. The speed pump was pretty impressive.

Chinese, if that’s a factor. Used Chinese I could buy without guilt. They make clones of just about every basic model listed on this thread.

Your grandfather's 12-gauge double was probably set up for paper hull shells and fiber shot wads, long before the ammo companies dreamed up the modern plastic shells and integral wad and shot-cup design. The "forcing cone" area of the barrels in front of the chambers is more abrupt in those older guns, which can make the recoil more intense when shooting modern shells. Ask a local gunsmith about reaming the barrels to work better with new shells - and also look around for the 12-gauge "mini shells". Those have slightly lighter shot loads, but are friendlier to the shoulder.

These days, it's good to have options.

I love shotguns but would not consider one for home defense. Imagine this scenario:
Bad guy standing behind your wife with gun to head or knife to throat. You are in good cover and have a shot at his head. Still want a shotgun?

As a fellow senior, I will advise buying a semi auto 20 gage, not a twelve gage. If you can handle a pump, they’re less expensive. Maverick 88 in 20 is an ideal shotgun for seniors and smaller folks. There is great ammo for the twenty/

Some forty years ago the magazine “Soldier of Fortune” had a combat shoot off with shotguns. Nearly every entrant’s weapon of choice was the Remington 870. I’ve never forgotten that.

The SKS preceded the AK-47, and is in no way a knock-off.
