I'd like to know what constituted a "bag and a half". What does a "bag" mean in ounces? Why bother with minor details. What about his medical history? What about the rest of his diet over this period?

Yes, *real* licorice can do this, and yes it does not take a huge amount. But people with normal self control aren't going to binge to that degree. And those with no self control? If it's not licorice it certain to be something else. Besides, they still vote Democrat after they're dead, so what's the big deal anyway?
Yep, the Dutch love licorice, the real stuff. You never hear about them dropping dead. Something missing here.

My mom-in-law was a private duty nurse, she once had a patient who had almost killed herself by drinking an excessive amount of water and not eating. She went on some crazy crash diet and yes, her electrolytes got all messed up.

I cautioned my cousin 20 years ago about licorice. She has a masters in biology, but she didn’t know it was harmful. Before I informed her, she said black licorice was one of her family’s favorite treats and they ate a lot of it. Naturally, she cut it way back.
And I’m guessing when granny ends up in the ER with heart problems, no one even thinks to ask her if she eats a lot of black licorice or takes licorice root supplements.
Believe it or not, there are still people who don’t realize that their doctors need to be informed of any herbal supplements and over the counter meds they take. They only report their prescription meds, thinking the over the counter stuff doesn’t count.
