In May, the Trump administration seized a 250-ton, $3 million Chinese high-voltage transformer that was on its way to Colorado.
The manufacturer of the high-voltage 500,000-pound transformer was Chinese company JiangSu HuaPeng Transformer Co., Ltd., or JSHP, which shipped the transformer from Shanghai to the Port of Houston in August 2019.
JSHPs North American representative Jim Cai told Motherboard his company planned to spend a couple of hundred thousand dollars to transport the high-grade steel using a particular kind of railroad car to WAPAs Ault substation in Colorado, where JSHP would then install it. Like all electric substations, the Ault facilitys main purpose is to step down high-voltage electricity, typically above 1,000 volts, to lower, more manageable levels that can be distributed safely to homes and businesses.
Before the ship docked in Texas, WAPA told JSHP to cancel its plans to transport and install the transformer and to forget about selling a warranty on the equipment, which is almost always mandatory for highly specialized, expensive electrical system equipment. The utility then transported the transformer itself to Sandia.
JSHPs Cai denies the presence of a backdoor in his companys equipment but says he believes that DOE suspects China of booby-trapping its power grid gear. Cai points to early 2019 press reports in which DOE officials talk about the risks of Chinese equipment in electric facilities.
...Cai says... he thinks that DOE suspects one of his companys transformers installed at the Bayonne (NJ) Energy Center, a generating facility now owned by Scottish company Ethos Energy, was responsible for the so-called blue sky incident in New York in late-December 2018. In that widely reported arcing incident, an explosion at ConEds Astoria substation caused the New York skyline to shine bright blue for a brief period.

Why the hell are we putting a “JiangSu HuaPeng” into our power grid and not a GE ?? Or a Hitachi/ABB or similar ? Using not just China made products but Chinese brands to build our infrastructure is suicide.
Vice was once edgy and gonzo but the founder sold the magazine (and it resold a couple of times). He went on to found the Proud Boys and Lefties went on the run/ruin his magazine.
While this comment has nothing about the posting concerns Its prompted by where that electrical component comes from.
Americans better WISE UP/
Key swamp demons were making fortunes when they allowed US companies in a number of industries including pharma, computer; and electrical as well metal fabrication components even bicycles relocate their factories in China . To the point where China was our sole supplier. The money the CCP has now comes from US .If we play our Chinese checkers right we can really turn things around for the better not only here but in China as well.
As to those seeking information about the transformer - shove it, you’d don’t have a need to know.
Information “made public” is information supplied to enemies as well. If DOE is not speaking, then just move on.
That’s the way I read it as well. That, on a practical basis, the CHinese may not have built the transformer properly either (bad insulation in one wrap of one cable in one phase is “all” that is needed) but a timed failure or remotely-induced failure requires some sort of trip mechanism or switch or power tap device that “should be” hard to hide.
These transformers operated between 45,000 volts and 500,000 volts. It is “easy” the burn the whole thing up if you can start a small failure in one place. The hard part is NOT making the dumb thing burn up!
Never mind Mitsubishi
The No 1 in small corporate jets is provided by Honda Aviation:
Honda also makes their own jet engines.
That’s crazy talk!
It’s not like electricity is of vital national importance...
Then they should file a formal complaint with the Chinese government got it on record for the whole world to see. Let people know who they're dealing with when they buy Chinese junk.
I worked for a medical device company. they had a piece of equipment made in china.
The software was so full of spyware that they had to remove the internet connection and put signs all over the machine warning to NEVER connect it to the internet.
Most likely is that China designed a transformer that THEY COULD SHUT DOWN REMOTELY, to be able to take down our power grid.
The article (which you butchered) says nothing like that.
Why is any American regional power entity BUYING A BOX OF PENCILS, forget about a gazillion $/watt transformer from CHINA?
The Chinese have/had plans to shut down the grid November 4th. I think it has been thwarted.
GE divested their transformer division.
bttt
I like that.
