NBA legend Michael Jordan is launching a new NASCAR team with Bubba Wallace, the only black driver on stock car racing's top circuit and the sport's most coveted free agent.
Jordan, currently the majority owner of the NBA's Charlotte Hornets, announced Monday that he is starting the one-car team along with veteran driver Denny Hamlin.
'Historically, NASCAR has struggled with diversity and there have been few black owners,' Jordan said in his statement. 'The timing seemed perfect as NASCAR is evolving and embracing social change more and more.'
The partnership was announced Monday night in coordinated social media posts by Jordan and Hamlin, with Wallace adding his own comment. The posts showed a picture of Jordan alongside a firesuit-clad Hamlin in a motorhome at a race track.

So MJ is obsessed with race too. Disappointing.
Go for it MJ.
MJ is about to learn the way to make a small fortune in racing is to start with a large one. Double that when you hire a driver who quit after never winning a race.
Michael Jordan is arguably the best basketball player ever, and the first global sports superstar and billionaire.
Bubba Wallace is a Black loser.
Does literally everything have to be about race with these people? Talk about living with huge chips on their shoulders along with massive inferiority complex’s.
Yes, NOOSECAR is embracing social change. They will soon find there won’t be enough transgender fans to keep the doors open.
So hire the driver who has never won a race. Smart.
Playing AA baseball was a far better decision than this.
Disappointed in MJ. Used to really like him.
Why not give your cash to an inner-city Charter School? Or two? Or TEN? You’ll get a better return on your investment that way, as far as changing lives and lifting others UP is concerned.
Quit keeping kids DOWN, Michael Jordan! Don’t be Stuck On Stupid!
Are we going to start seeing really expensive hubcaps on NASCARs now?
Jordan used to coach the Wizards for a while. He’d teach them some thing where he’d push off of a defender to get a clear shot and team members would say, “We aren’t you. We’re not going to get away with that on the court without a foul.”
No doubt Jordan will teach Wallace a way to win, even if it does involve cheating.
No I think he's trying to walk a very fine line here. I'm sure he was approached by NASCAR .... why else is this happening now? As far as NASCAR is concerned it's a win - win - a black-owned race team and a black driver. And for MJ, a foray into a new world of competition, although I doubt if he is going to be very hands-on... he's too busy on the golf course.
Neither one.
... [Bubba Wallace] the sport’s most coveted free agent.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I thought that was Colin Kneelpernick /S.
After at least 40 years of NASCAR, there is no NOOSECAR in my house.
>>’Historically, NASCAR has struggled with diversity and there have been few black owners,’ Jordan said in his statement.
I can think of several black entertainers who have billions. Why don’t they buy some cars/drivers if more need to “be” owners?
It isn’t like buying a ball sports franchise.
No interest here, don’t care.
I have no problems with this, Michael Jordan is using his own money (Capitalism) to support a driver he likes. Now if MJ asked that Bubba Wallace be given an automatic 5 lap lead due to ‘Systemic Racism’, THAT would bring an objection!
What was the "struggle?"
Were they being kept out?
What was stopping an African-American from forming their own team before?
Just because there are few of a minority in a league doesn't mean there was a "struggle" to participate.
