14-YEAR-OLD DEER HUNTER KILLED AFTER BEING RUN OVER BY CORN HARVESTER

A young deer hunter was killed on Saturday, Sept. 12 after being run over by a corn harvester. The boy, Jeffrey Powell from Elkton, Michigan, fell asleep shortly after arriving at the corn field to hunt deer, investigators believe. The machine operator, a 25-year-old from Pigeon, was harvesting the field with a large Krone corn chopper.

Emergency responders were called to the field, located in Chandler Township, just before 9 a.m. The machine operator discovered the teenager after driving over him, a news release by the Huron County Sheriff’s Office said.

Combines cut the crop and separate the grain from the plant while processing and spreading the remaining material over the field.

“Unaware anyone was in it [the field], the hunter was accidentally driven over and found by the chopper operator a very short while later,” the Huron Daily Tribune reported. The boy was pronounced dead at the scene.

You can learn more about Jeffrey Powell and his life here.

I just watched a video the other day showing the harvesters working on a corn field, amazing machines, but yes, very deadly if you’re in their path. Just a horrible story.

I grew up in farming and learned early to treat moving parts with care.

I couldn’t imagine trying to live with that.

Have you ever tried to wake up a sleeping teenager? I’m not being glib; they are really hard to wake. At the slow speed of the farm machine, the noise would have probably been faint, slowing growing very loud, which would have probably not have awakened him, or at least not in time for him to jump up.

.First, don’t deer love to munch on corn remenants? I always see them clustered around the edges.

Yeah, that edge habitat is good 'eatin. They will venture further out into the field to clean up the corn, and also after hunting season is over.

Sounds like a good use for those old bicycle flags we used to strap on the back of our bikes.

Its like the scuba divers on the lake who have the safety float to warn boaters off.

“Perhaps there was an obvious deer trail in the field and the boy was just waiting for the deer to come to him.”

Unfortunately it was a John Deere. Sad all the way around.

Lower other places but in Michigan the minimum age to hunt alone appears to be 17.

Doesn’t make sense to be right in the middle of one. Corn fields are great places to hide or flee from something. Edges are great places to setup a shot.

Agreed. His family will grieve for their loss and the poor 25 year old will have that in his mind, yes in his mind the rest of his life. So tragic.

Couldn’t care less about minimums. I’m more about common sense.

14 is 14. Adults need to be there to supervise and mentor.

The idea is that you sit a row or two in from the edge of the uncut corn and
look out over the cut field towards a deer trail going into the woods...got my
first deer in this very manner at about the same age. Deepest condolences to
the family...what a terrible way to die.

“Yes. I can’t imagine why he’d be in the corn field”

You must be a city-dwelling non-hunter?
