The United States is on the cusp of a huge pig 'time bomb' with the number feral hogs increasing in huge numbers.
Research scientist Dr. Jack Mayer, a zoologist who has been researching wild pigs for 40 years, has warned that the population could keep on growing unless there is a sudden swine flu epidemic.
'It's a crazy situation with everything that's happened in what I call the Pig Bomb, which has exploded in North America,' Jack Mayer told The Daily Beast about the wild population of six million and two million in Texas alone.
Florida, Georgia, and California also have vast populations.

Have the butcher make sausage out of the older pigs.
The larger the pig, the more hot sauce or BBQ sauce you need. Wild smaller pigs and piglets taste better then store bought pork. Cooked some for my wife and she argued with me that it was beef not pork. I dressed out the hog for a hunting partner and took some nice cuts for my effort. I knew what I cooked. Took a lot of the scraps, boiled the meat off the bone added brown rice and fresh broccoli. Fed that to my dogs for three days. Healthier then dog food.

Yes. Wild pig bacon and sausage is the true Heirloom Pork.
The trails they create in the National Forest looks like a one lane road. You could not Bush Hog a better trail. But they destroy a lot of the forest and are damn near impossible to find. The forest is 160,000 acres of dense brush, swamp, marsh and very easy to get lost in.
The younger ones are better than the big old ones.
Wild pigs have very tough bones in their shoulders and their skulls. I hunt pigs with a .223, but the shot needs to go into the ear. That is a weak point and the round goes right into the skull and scrambles the brain. They drop right where they were standing.
Well, it looks like we are just going to have to pitch in and eat lots and lots of bacon, as much as it pains us to do so...

Should I find myself armed while a sounder of hogs approaches, I will aim for the smaller targets.
The preferred method for killing these hogs is the AR-15.
And in Texas, you can book a helicopter flight and shoot them from the air. There are several videos of people doing that, somewhat reminiscent of Vietnam.
It seems to be obligatory to play loud rock and roll music while doing so.
Year round open season with no bag limit is what we have now in Texas. In addition, no hunting license is required as of last year. Feral hogs are no longer considered game, they are officially 100% pests.
That’s the advantage of using a trap. The corn finishes the hogs to get rid of much of the gaminess.

There’s grilled pork, smoked pork, bbq pork, baked pork, broiled pork, seared pork, fried pork, moshu pork, mongolian pork, maple pork, pork jerky, pork and beans....
I think a .223 or 5.56 may be a little to light, even though it has a good muzzle velocity. A 7.62/.308 would be better with more mass, same velocity, thus more joules.
Texas it’s ok to have a 30 round magazine for hogs. I rather prefer it. What if hogzilla gets pissed and brings some of his friends?
308’s okay, but 45-70’s even better :)
I knew they were tough, but damn. Glad I haven’t tried it yet, as it would’ve been with .223.

Taking them alive would require non-lethal weapons, I would think. But I myself probably wouldn’t try to taze a wild hog.
My grand dad was in the Calvary and he may have had a 45-70 but I don’t know that for sure! In any event, it is a decent round for hogs for sure especially in thick brush where you can easily kick one of these critters up. I like the 308 because I have an LR for it and with a 20 rd mag I may need quick follow ups! My buddy swears by his 300 blackout for them.
