Why live in a city there are far more rural places that fit the bill

While I don't have 6K in monthly military benefits, I can relate to this situation. Anyone who had the foresight to put away $40 a week into an IRA beginning in the 80s should have have a similar size nest egg. In fact, if you have also been participating in a 401K since the 80s, you should have much more than $1 million in your nest egg but I digress.

I am 5 years from collecting full SS. I live in a deep blue state. I do not want to live my retirement years in a deep blue state. My advice is to find a college town in a red state. While the town itself may be blue, the surrounding area most likely are deep red. My goal is to live in the deep red part. Do your own research but areas that are at the top of my list are : Bloomington IN, Auburn AL and Johnson City TN
