1. to get rid of the opponents (Jacob Astor, Isidor Straus, and Benjamin Guggenheim) to creating the Fed.
2. Insurance scam.

Perhaps the most interesting recent issue is the battle over the telegraph and why. Some believe it will offer important evidence about the sinking. Some believe there are those with nefarious reasons to prevent its recovery.
