Saw much larger rats in Haifa Israel in 1987.
That grainery port in Haifa has rats as big around as a Collie dog just with not quite as large legs.
Rats apparently put on size just like stock animals when they eat raw grain.
I was in the Navy and my ship was berthed at the pier.
The normal metal rat guards we use to keep vermin from crawling up the ropes (lines) that we tie the ship to the pier...those rat guards were not big enough to keep the rats away.
We had to post extra sailors on watch at each line to.keep.them off.
Might have slaughtered one of the rats with a stick clean I returned from a night of drinking.

I remember reading a book by a journalist who was in Paris during the siege (Franco-Prussian War). He described a dinner party where the main course was a large roasted rat surrounded by roasted mice.
