The elevators are the biggest problem. The longer the cables, the heavier they will be.

It would be built similarly to how they are built now, with elevators stopping every thirty floors for everybody to ride another thirty floors.

“The elevators are the biggest problem. The longer the cables, the heavier they will be.“

With advances in electric motors and computer control there is no reason that cables cannot be eliminated and the lifting motor to be part of the elevator car itself.

Also there is no reason that the elevator cars to be placed in a shaft, why can they not travel up the sides of the building on special rails?

Plumbing would be a hassle. Getting water up there to flush toilets, etc.

Is it possible to do elevators as BIG linear motors?

"The elevators are the biggest problem. The longer the cables, the heavier they will be."

The current figure for elevators runs at 1,600 feet as wire suspension ropes cannot support their own weight and any additional weight after that point. Aside from the technical limitations, needing multiple elevator lobbies would take up too much valuable space. A few years ago, Finnish elevator company Kone developed a carbon fiber cable, UltraRope that they believe could double the distance of an elevator rope. This would be enough to get those would-be mile-high penthouse residents to their sky digs.

Still in development.

Long ago I observed trees after the passing of a cyclone. Those with deep taproots were the ones that survived." - Frank Lloyd Wright

Building a mile high expanding on Wright's observations would solve the elevator problem too. Elevators go up the first 30 floods then the building 'branches out'... allowing more creative ways to move people. Copying Disney original 'people movers' from EPCOT would move lots of people easily...a tree design also solves much of the balance problems.

Imitating a banyon tree - or many banyon trees and you've got a strong interconnected city in the sky. The Edison Winter House has a 400 foot banyon... a great tree to copy. That said, these types of buildings make more sense for places like the moon, Mars, etc.
