What does rig for red mean?

Mil people know exactly what, but IIRC from discussions, it means submarine going dark/using red lights that aren’t picked up on (radar?) so the enemy can’t see where the sub is. Attack mode.\

We (on a Submarine) rigged for red to allow our eyes to adjust to low light levels prior to going to periscope depth from a deeper depth.

Any ship operating at night rigs for red to limit detection AND save night vision. I once proposed it for certain lights in our house, but the better half preferred me stubbing my toes. ;-]

Between sunset and sunset ships are required to display navigation lights. Most ships do not show any other external lights so that other ships can see their navigation lights, and vice versa. Even cruise ships darken ship from the bridge forward.

The blue component in lighting destroys night vision. Ships 'rig for red', use red lighting, to preserve night vision and still allow people to move about safely.

It doesn't reduce detection. If you are close enough to see red lighting on a ship's bridge you are already too damn close for safe navigation.
