This would be the day when Ed Morrissey and I would kick off our yearly contest of reviewing the week’s games and picking some winners.
This isn’t any sort of protest we’re launching. It’s just that both of us have lost our enthusiasm for focusing on the NFL after all of the discord that’s been happening and neither of us felt like doing it this year. My apologies to anyone who was looking forward to it.
As of only a couple of hours before game time, I still don’t know what I’ll be doing going forward. Maybe it depends on how the Jets handle themselves. A part of me still wants to separate these issues and just ignore the political showboating on the sidelines and get on with watching the sport (and the team) that I’ve loved for my entire life. But perhaps the sense of disinterest that led Ed and me to stop doing the weekly NFL open threads will carry over to the game and the team.
I stopped watching baseball after the big strike in the 90s and really never looked back. I’ve never followed any other professional sports closely, if at all. Football was my only obsession in the sports world. How would I feel if I just walked away? As I said… I don’t know yet. I’ll give this a little time and see how it plays out. And I’m sure all of you will be similarly making your own choices. But if I’m done with football, it will be a real shame. I’m old enough to remember Joe Namath pulling off a miracle and winning the Super Bowl. That’s a lot of water under the bridge.

Just dawned on me. I haven’t seen a word anywhere about Brady and his new Super Bowl-bound team (not that I actually went looking). Did they play yesterday or are they playing Monday night?

Well jazz, you could grow a grow a pair and tell all the pro sports to pound sand. And keep pounding. A lot of us will never be back. Hard to boycott all the products that get advertised though with the diverse (no, not that ‘diverse’) product line ups that most corporations now have. Some are obvious and can be avoided. Others, not so much.
I read they lost to the Saints yesterday
They lost yesterday. The broadcast was full of reasons why they should still be considered the best. The Saints defense ate them up. (2 interceptions). Did not watch much of the first half and none of the half-time. The on-field messages in New Orleans were not bad and the local announcers seemed less prone to blabbering. Still, I feel dirty and a bit guilty for watching a (probably) illegal stream.
I love Football, Baseball, Ice Hockey, NASCAR Auto Racing, but...now, no more. I could care less about any of them. Getting involved with politics is a bad mistake and will take its toll as time goes by!!!
Now,these folks can back and support whomever they choose, but...do not bring it on the playing field or auto race track. If Lebron James & Bubba Wallace, etc. want to back a politician or cause, let them do it on their own time with their own money..period. And...if you cannot stand to honor our country and flag and National Anthem...then leave the country and go somewhere where you can be happy!!! I am sick of these whiners and them telling me how I should live my life and politics!!!
Asian gal Tennis Pro had masks on with Black’s that were killed. Black masks with large white letters. She changed them for each close up with a different persons name. She did this for racial injustice in the USA. Go figure.
I know a lot of Freepers who have wonderful lives, productive lives and never engage in any kind of frivolous activities who are just going to say “Give it up. I did X years ago and have never looked back” and I applaud them. Good for them. I am glad for them. Power to them all.
But I have been a fanatical football fan since 1971 when I saw my first game after returning to the USA from my family travel overseas, and every Sunday for the last twenty years or so, getting together to watch a game has provided a reason for a lifelong Navy buddy and I to spend several hours a week hanging out, theatrically yelling in both joy and despair, having some beers, and eating food.
My wife is not a sports widow. I don’t watch any other sports at all for the last 25 years or so, It has only been three hours every Sunday for a football game.
It provided us a good framework in which to get together, we didn’t have to do small talk, and we would engage in larger groups in larger parties with much comradeship and animated interaction. A couple of times a year I would go to a game, which was an all day affair. And a huge amount of fun, with a large extended group of fan-friends we have known for decades.
Now, this.
The Left has managed to suck dry all enjoyment of it. All of it.
I am one of those people that can barely drive to work without uttering oaths every time I pass a BLACK LIVES MATTER sign, or IN THIS HOME WE BELIEVE signs. Now, any reference to NFL football, or really, EVERY DAMNED SPORT makes me want to curse aloud.
So, this past Saturday, my best friend, who is as conservative as I am (we went in the USN under the “Buddy System” nearly half a century ago, now...) called me to see if I wanted to come over. So I did. Because I can’t ruin it for him, but...my heart was not in it. I usually liked to keep up on this, but this spring and summer, I couldn’t bring myself to read online a single thing. I simply did not care, which does grieve me.
At this point in my life, I appreciate anything that makes me feel passion outside of my concern for what is going on in this country, and I have too much of that lately.
Damn the Left to Hell. Damn them all to Hell.

The one that irritates the crap out of me is the “Science is Real” line.
Yeah.
You mean the “science” that rejects XX chromosomes signifies a woman, and XY signifies a male? That is apparently no “science” to them.
Their signs should say “OUR Science is Real”.
