The Big Broadcast is a Sunday night tradition for families throughout the WAMU listening area.

Longtime radio personality and The Big Broadcast host Ed Walker passed away early on Oct. 26 at age 83. We invite you to leave your thoughts and remembrances.

Saying Goodbye To Ed Walker

Ed Walker spent 65 years on the radio. His last program was unlike any other.

Hi Gina, Viking. The weekend seemed to blow by but chores were done, pit beef was made, and it's been good. Added another monitor to the computer setup. You?

Mmmmm. Pit beef. Over wood coals, Boog's BBQ or Bull On The Beach style? One year my mom was in O.C. and I had her pick me up a pair of pit beef sammiches with sauce from the boardwalk shop just before she left, then wrap and freeze them when she got back home. She said, "They won't be edible by the time you get here for Christmas!" I told her, no worries. I just counter-thawed them and the sauce, heated the meat, and put them on fresh buns. *chuckle*

Got a 3 lb. Boston butt going in the crock pot this evening. Should be ready in another hour or so, I think. Did a mix of Johnny's Whiskey Sauce, Private Selection Southern Bourbon sauce, and Jim Beam Southern Tang bourbon BBQ sauce, then drowned it and put it on low. Gonna have either Bush's Southern pit BBQ beans or tomatoes and okra on the side with buttered pull-apart BBQ bread. (Notice a theme?)

Batten down the pool umbrellas, Gina. Like the crazy aunt in the attic, looks like Sally's paying us a visit in a couple days. The forecast track is so bizarre, it looks like it's doing the limbo.

My personal style is to smoke it till 115f then give it all a heavy sear.

What’s pull-apart BBQ bread?

BBQ bread comes in two versions: sliced, or unsliced. The unsliced is baked in a way that allows the consumer to 'pull apart' a slice from the rest of the loaf, like one long dinner roll. It's a broad, flatter loaf than regular bread, rectangular, and it's delicious - thick, fluffy, sort of sweet. Makes great toast, or for sopping up juices on the plate. Connie likes to butter it then put it under the broiler for about 60 seconds. This is what is sitting next to the crock pot - Sunbeam:

Those so inclined might enjoy this:
“WJSV Complete Broadcast Day -
On September 21, 1939, radio station WJSV in Washington, D.C. transcribed an entire day of broadcasting. If you are curious as to what radio was actually like in those days, there is no better way than by listening to these MP3 files.”

Oh, both of you guys’ beast sounds excellent! Mmmmm!!! We’re having hamburgers on the Big Green Egg. Keith makes the BEST smoked burgers. And I’ll cut up some potatoes and put them in the Fry Daddy for french fries.

Yes, Viking, we’re watching Mustang Sally now, baby. Sheesh!

Yer welcome - kind of fun to have it play in the background as you go about a day.

Ah, well it’s nice to start a (broadcast) day with Arthur Godfrey and morning music! He was at the end of his radio career when I was a kid (I think Godfrey went off radio in 72), but I remember those late radio days well.

Thanks, I'll check it out. I assume you know there are many 24/7 OTR internet radio stations to enjoy.

Yup, I stream them often on my PC and phone, sometimes to fall asleep to. Thanks for letting me know, anyway!
