In my experience, very old people remember plenty about years past, even lifetimes of years. It’s the recent past that they seem to lose.

My mother was just a couple of months shy of 102 when she passed. She could remember every detail of events from when she was a child or young adulthood. She and her last remaining sibling could sit and reminisce about their childhood and other family members from “back then” for hours. But, she couldn’t remember much from just the day before.
