Astronomy Picture of the Day - A Thousand Meteors

Explanation: Over a thousand meteors flash through the night in this intriguing timelapse video. Starting in April 2019 the individual video frames were selected from 372 relatively clear nights of imaging from an automated wide-field observatory in rural New South Wales Australia. Arranged by local sidereal time, a timekeeping system that uses the positions of stars to measure Earth's rotation, the frames follow the full annual progression of constellations through the wide field of view seen from 33 degrees south latitude. They capture a diverse array of meteors including sporadic meteors, bright fireballs, and shower meteors (plus a lightning sprite), during the period. All frames were processed consistently and so show real variations in the local sky conditions.

That’s breathtaking. Serves to remind us just how puny and insignificant we are vis-a-vis the might and majesty present in our night skies.

Even though it’s the Southern Hemisphere it really messed me up seeing right-to-left motion of the starfield. And Orion’s upside down! I’ve never been south of Mazatlan, really want to see the southern stars someday.

When lucky enough to see a meteor shower live—don’t blink! 1987, NW Ohio.

Well worth the "click". Thanks for sharing. Was "down under" in Melbourne, VIC during mid-DEC 2007. Got to see Orion standing on his head there and the Southern Cross over the North Island of NZ the next week. 2 ticks on my bucket list.

Ah yes, Betelgeuse, Rigel and the Orion Nebula right in the middle of Orions Sward, just upside down. I have seen Orion and the Southern Cross from very high in the Andes in Argentina.

Certain times of the year you can see the Southern Cross from the summit of Mauna Kea, Hawaii.
Low on the horizon, but you can see it.
You don’t have to leave America to see some of the Southern skies.
