A South African conservationist has been killed by lions he hand-reared, the family said on Thursday. West Mathewson, 69, was walking two white lionesses on Wednesday when one of the animals attacked and killed him without warning.
A lioness became aggressive towards the other and then turned her attention to Mathewson, reports the BBC's Nomsa Maseko from Johannesburg. His relatives have said that the attack could have been the result of very rough play.
The incident took place on the premises of the family-owned Lion Tree Top Lodge, in South Africa's northern Limpopo province.

But a lion had hired the bandits to kill him.
I wonder.
Which is all we can do.
I don't understand people (past adolescence) who take significant, unnecessary risks of death. However, that doesn't mean that they don't have an internally consistent worldview in which dying of lions or stingrays or drowning or falling is fully accepted.
He HISSED ears back and swatted me across the face for no apparent reason this has happened twice now in 8 years but it is very bewildering!! I have to wonder if there is just something that happens if a cat wants to be left alone, I talked to my vet the second time this happened I brought him in but there were no health problems so I have to wonder if a big cat could also have a sudden mood swing like that!!!
If it was a Cape Buffalo I would have no trouble believing it.
My daughters boyfriend is a skydiver, hundreds of jumps, he says it's perfectly safe. Sorry but I'm not buying it.
Says the lady who gets in a car driven by teenagers. :)
“Unnecessary” is the key word. If I want another transportation asset - or not to have to drive the young person to work or Your Local Game Store - I have to put in the time with the terrifying teen driver.
Fortunately, Patrick can walk to his job at Walmart, about 2-1/2 miles each way, with sidewalks, tolerably well lit. He’s been coming home safely between 11:00 p.m. and midnight the last week.
It’s always “perfectly safe” until you die.
Thank you!! I love the Far Side!! I knew there were some out there!!
