Have a friend (71) who escaped Yugoslavia at 9 years old with his family sailing across the Adriatic for 14 hours at night and picked up by a Greek patrol boat and finally made their way to the US as they had some family here.
He’s fond of saying the ignorant bastards here clamoring for socialism will be eating out of garbage cans like they did. They had nothing. The government controlled every aspect of your life while a cadre of the connected and well healed lived high on the hog. The secret police would show up at your door and people would disappear in the middle of the night and were never seen again.
In 1946, the Communists won a decisive victory, promising a progressive, moderate, and inclusive sort of socialism. In 1948 they staged a coup and established total control. Elections would not be held again until 1990.
I think this point got glossed over. The communists got a toehold through free elections, but then the coup did away with elections and established the communist dictatorship. If the people had been able to , they may well have voted communists out.

Klement Gottwald was the Stalinst leader of Czechoslovakia, at the time.
In 1929, he was elected to the Czech National Assembly, this was from his first speech:
“And we are the party of the Czechoslovak Proletariat and our supreme chief of staff is indeed Moscow. We go to Moscow to learn, do you know what? We go to Moscow to learn from the Russian Bolsheviks how to wring your necks. And you know that the Russian Bolsheviks are masters in this respect… That grin will be wiped off your faces!”

So just skip the middle and start shooting right away. Less people will die and much misery will be avoided.
Be aware that the lacy pantie wearing set will cry copious tears and clutch their pearls while telling you that you should "respect the vote" and "you can not tell that it will end in tyranny".
Ignore them. They have never been right and never will be.
