Police aren’t social workers, at least not yet.
Usually the state or county will have some crisis hotline to call.
Good Grief.
Must be an autistic black Utahan kid because police never shoot non-blacks.
When you can’t handle your 13 year-old, Heaven help you.
More than one person has posted that there isn't a situation so bad that calling the cops can't make it worse.JBT Ping list
Any police department (or university faculty, or military unit, etc.) is only as good as the worst psycho they tolerate. ~ H/T RedStateRocker
“report of a boy who had threatened people with a weapon. The young man reportedly ran and was shot by an officer after being pursued by police.”
Some of these “autistic” boys are complete psychopath terrors.
Unarmed? Throwing a tantrum?
Don’t call the cops.
Simple.
Well, at least the kid is white, thankfully.
When police shoot unarmed white people towns do not burn.
Maybe next time mom will rethink about those who she asks for help.
White lives don’t matter.
Worst thing you can do is call the cops in most cases in a domestic setting.
You should never call the police except...well, never.
A friend is fond of saying, “No situation is so bad it can’t be made worse by calling the police.”
Surely the mother had to deal with this issue a number of times. Her method was to call the cops? This would be like calling a plumber to do your gardening. A friend has a daughter with his first wife who has severe developmental issues. The daughter is also as strong as most men her size. It takes extreme patience and work to keep the daughter on an even keel. Every time the ex-wife had the daughter she called the cops and tried to have the daughter Backer-acted.
After numerous incidents the husband got sole custody over the daughter and can legally keep the daughter away from the mother. But this went on for years before a judge finally said, “Okay, I see what’s going on here.”
I’ve taught kids with autism. When they lose their self control, they can lose it pretty badly. We had teacher’s aides who were specially trained on how to restrain an autistic kid having a tantrum. Some 13-year-olds can be man-sized. The report says he was armed with a weapon. An out-of-control kid waving a butcher’s knife could be a real problem. If he came running towards you, what would you do?
Sounds like 9mm. Multiple gunshot wounds and the little terror is “ recovering in the hospital”
WTF does that even mean? Its like calling Home Depot because you need a hamburger.
In the 50 & 60s it was “wait till your father gets home”, now it’s “Do I have to call 911?”
It usually involves several restraining the individual, and administering medication.
Perhaps some kind of partnership could be formed/training provided between mental health workers and police, for when they deal with this type of situation?
At minimum, could a tranquilizer gun be used?
Bad choice on her part.
With the benefit of hindsight, the cops probably should listened to her when told them she had a rowdy autistic child, and told her that there was nothing they could do.
I guess the cops tried to hard.
Why would a mom call the cops for help with a mentally disabled kid-I’m sure he has a psychotherapist-and maybe a doc-the psychotherapist is the person to call-they can get staff from a psych facility to go and do what it takes to calm the kid down-take him into inpatient care if necessary-cops are not mental health facility emoployees-does that mom call an auto mechanic to order a pizza?
