You are right the 911 systems is great for some things.

But for problems like this child it is totally lacking.

I highly doubt that the 13yoa knew or understood what would happen to him for not OBEYING a LEO.

What one hears from the health/medical community after hours call 911 or go to the ER.

Trying to get your doctor to help solve a problem after hours is just horrible.

Find a solution and you will help solve many problems.

They’re trained to aim for the center of mass of an Emotionally Disturbed Person. Does that count?

This kid was probably in a day program until lockdown era.

Then he was stuck at home with mom 24/7 with kids activities no outside controls.

I’m amazed this doesn’t happen more often. Poor family.

If he came running towards you, what would you do?

Shoot him in the leg unless you don't like him then shoot him in the chest or head to make sure he dies? Actually, probably killing, while much worse, is safer than all the court hearings over the guy can't walk, see how sad he is, how could you, versus, he's dead, give us 250,000 and we'll call it even.

Never call the cops unless weapons and lives are involved
Call for medics at 911

Call the cops on someone who has a weapon. What did she think would happen? Are people really this stupid?

Were I a single mom with a big angry out of control 13 year old that’s what I’d do.

I don’t know if he was big and strong but 13 year olds can be. And women can be weak and small.

So what are they going to do? Call the police and get him killed?
Violent behavior from a child is never acceptable and you shouldn’t make excuses for it. If you can’t handle them, put them in a facility. But don’t make some poor cop have to shoot them. He doesn’t deserve that.

I have a niece with autism. She's damn smart...a great kid...but,despite being in her 30s,doesn't have the first bloody clue what this world is about. She was involved in a situation a few years ago...involving a weapon...where the cops might have shot her...but didn't.

In an earlier day my niece would have been confined to a psychiatric hospital (obviously not a pleasant fate) where she might have been even unhappier than she is today but she'd at least be less likely to be able to endanger herself or others.

Autism is a brain disease...a truly tragic one...that's absolutely chock full of sadness and the potential for disaster.

Some people are so simple-minded they cannot fathom that you can oppose crooked cops and police brutality without supporting the fake “BLM” bowel movement.

I worked with mentally retarded adults at a residential facility as a caseworker from 1975 to 1983-one of the 1st things we were taught in orientation was how to properly and safely do a takedown...

Yes. The one liners and tropes in it have been used in a vast array of online quips and "memes".

One of my favorites...

Salt Lake Mayor Erin Mendenhall said in a statement late Sunday that the shooting was a tragedy

A tragedy is when someone dies in a house fire. This was negligent homicide.

The truth is...you are unfortunately better off in life never calling police. Try to take care of your own sh*t and leave the “system” out of it, unless you enjoy headaches. That is not necessarily anti-police sentiment. Just prudent advice based on experience.

“...there isn’t a situation so bad that calling the cops can’t make it worse.”

This is 100% consistent with BLM.

How does your position/opinion of police differ from BLM?

The fundamental problem with this story is that there are two conflicting narratives. The police say they received a call about a teenager who was armed, threatening others.

The mother says she told the police he was unarmed, and did not know how to regulate his behavior.

Which is true?

If the police show up expecting a teenager who is armed and threatening, the the mother says “he can’t behave”, and the boy is then running toward neighbors, they might well shoot him.

So, why do the police think he was reported as armed? Did the mother say that to get them to come out, expecting that when they got there, she could say “hey, he’s not really armed, i just made that up”?

That is what it sounds like.

I would think that by the time you had raised an autistic boy to 13, you would have an organization to call when he gets unruly, that would know how to handle it. NOT the police.

But I bet if you called police to say “my son is Autistic, and he’s gotten worked up, and I’m afraid he will hurt himself”, they might have a better outcome.

If he had a weapon, then disarm him instead of calling the police. Would you rather tase your child or watch the police kill him? Would you rather knock him out with a brick or watch the police shoot him? At some point, you have to do something.

When I was an EMT, I watched another EMT cave some mental kid’s head in with a radio but the kid didn’t die.
