I wish it was Billy: that man was a stone killer and if I remember correctly, his comment about Richtofen's death was "I hope he roasted all the way down".
Now that's a warrior!

"Of many interesting tidbits about the rotary aircraft engines I actually remember, they used castor bean oil, still a very good lubricant."
Hence the brand name, "Castrol". Popular in pre-WW2 British cars.

Western Canada is full of warriors, and the way things are looking, some people will find out soon enough. Guys like Billy are alive and well.
That was a off topic, but the left is pushing hard for it.

Great piece of history - my paternal grandfather (1899-1949) whom I never met spent a few years in the Army Air Corps as a fly-along mechanic in de Havilland 4Bs, with the 6th Pursuit Squadron stationed at Luke Field in Hawaii.
On October 30, 1922 his biplane collided with another aircraft and crashed into Pearl Harbor - the pilot (1st Lt. V.T. Hynes) was killed, and grandpa spent a few months in the hospital.

A friend recently told me that shes a distant relative to Von Richthofen. She said they have some family heirlooms that belonged to him along with the paperwork to prove it.

Thanks Red Badger. Irrelevant sidebar: I vaguely recall a documentary interview with an American pilot of WWI; sometime after the war he'd gone to a museum and found his very plane on display. He got excited and crawled on up into the pilot seat. Museum guards and so on hustled over to kick him out, but after he told them his story, they not only let him stay, they hired him. :^)

I read that the High Commands on both sides wouldn’t allow pilots parachutes even though Balloon observers had them. The reason or so I read was that the High Commands thought “no man would go up in a plane to fight and stay to keep fighting if they had a safe way (parachute) to leave the plsne”.

Hmmmm...I wonder how many of them in High Command had actually had experience going up in those things...
Sigh. WWI seems to be a case in point of poor leadership and bad decisions.
